The Admirable Crichton in the Earls' Study. Got me looking into his history. What a guy!!!! Some say he was born in Eliock House near Sanquhar others that he was born in Cluny. http://www.electricscotland.com/history/other/crichton_james.htm [The Admirable Crichton refers to James Crichton of Eliock and Cluny, a sixteenth century polymath who lived in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland . He was renowned for his learning in many fields, but lost his life after being stabbed by a university student. A memorial to him can be found in the church of St. Bride's in Sanquhar.] http://encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/The_Admirable_Crichton
Sanquhar is 18 miles south of Ayrshires' Dumfries House, on the A76.
ý[The {Eliock] estate was Dalziel property in 1388, thence it passed to the Crichtons, and then in 1462 to the Charteris family. It was regained by the Crichtons, who probably built the tower. Robert Crichton was Lord Advocate for Mary Queen of Scots, and James 6th. His son was the 'Admirable Crichton', who may have been born here rather than at their other property of Clunie. It was sold to Stewart of Balquhane in 1593, then returned to the Dalziels in the 17thc. The Veitch family purchased it and held it until the 19thc.] Source M Coventry COS 4
