KIRKOSWALD, AyrshireVillage on the A77, 13 m. SW of Ayr. Burns studied surveying and mensuration here (1775), sleeping at Ballochniel Farm (1 m. S), where his uncle worked. The nightmare ride in ‘Tam o' Shanter’ ended here. Tam and his ‘ancient drouthy cronie’ were modelled on Douglas Graham and John Davidson, who are both buried in the churchyard. They were all friends of the souter (cobbler) and met at his house (Souter Johnnie's House, NTS), which now contains Burnsiana and cobbler's tools. www.jrank.org/literature/pages/13406/Kirkoswald-Ayrshire.html#ixzz0ec3WIEiSSouter Johnnie's Cottage, Main Road, Kirkoswald, South Ayrshire, KA19 8HY Souter Johnnie was a character in the Burns poem Tam o' Shanter.
