ALLOWAY, AyrshireVillage on the B7024, 1 ½ m. S of Ayr. Robert Burns was born (1759) in the thatched single‐room cottage with the barn and cowshed built by his father. The cottage is now at the centre of the extensive Burns Heritage Park (http://www.burnsheritagepark.com). The museum at the rear of the cottage has original Burns letters, songs, and other relics. Just S the monument, built in 1820 by public subscriptions raised by Boswell's son, stands in gardens overlooking the old Brig o' Doon, where Burns's Tam o' Shanter on his grey mare outstripped the warlocks and hags. When Burns was 6, the family moved to Mt Oliphant Farm (1 ½ m. S), where he became his father's main help and an efficient ploughman. He was taught at Alloway School by John Murdoch and followed him to the Grammar School at Ayr when he moved there. www.jrank.org/literature/pages/11847/Alloway-Ayrshire.html#ixzz0ec5LJX85
