Undiscovered Scotland: www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/irvine/irvine/index.htmlHISTORICAL TOUR of IRVINE, AYRSHIRE a walking tour around our Ancient and Royal Burgh: www.irvineayrshire.org/tour/index.htmIRVINE, AyrshirePort on the W coast, 12 m. N of Ayr. James Montgomery was born (1771) in the house later called Montgomery House, in Montgomery St. and now demolished. He was the son of a pastor of the Moravian Brethren and his hymns remain popular today. Burns lodged (1781–2) at 4 Glasgow Vennel (plaque) while learning flax dressing, and then moved to lodgings in the High St., where he became very ill with pleurisy. He lost all his possessions when the house caught fire after he had celebrated Hogmanay with his friends and he moved back to Glasgow Vennel. He spent seven months here and is commemorated by a statue on Irvine Moor. John Galt, whose father was a sea captain, was born (1779) in the High St. (the site was later a bank). The scene of Galt's novel Annals of the Parish (1821) is set in Dreghorn (2 m. E) and the surrounding villages. Galt's family moved to Greenock when he was 10 and other Galt relatives moved into the house. It was with them that their young cousin Edgar Allan Poe came to stay in 1815, and attended the Royal School. www.jrank.org/literature/pages/13289/Irvine-Ayrshire.html#ixzz0ec7XIUl5
