CASTLE (Comenoch Castle, Cumnock Castle, Cumno Castle, Black Bog Castle), New Cumnockwww.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=44712On 11 September 1297 the Scottish army won the Battle of Stirling Bridge although vastly outnumbered. The English army numbered 3,000 cavalry and 8,000 to 10,000 infantry. Now, if Edward I raised a VAST army in August 1307, what numbers are we talking about coming up to the top of the Nith in Scotland led by his son?

It's strange just how few people realise New Cumnock is a Gateway to the Southern Uplands or how close it is to the Southern Upland Way. Follow the town's Glen Afton Path to Afton Reservoir and you're only six miles from the Southern Upland Way a few miles from Sanquhar. www.southernuplandway.gov.uk/cms/

A small, friendly, rural site, perfectly sistuated for your holiday home. If you love peace and quiet, getting away from the hustle and bustle of busy life, enjoy the open fresh air with great views, with local golfing, fishing and exploring the Scottish countryside all year round, then Glen Afton Park offers peace and tranquillity with stunning views of Blackcraig and Craigdarroch which slope down to the river Afton, flowing gently amid fields and forestry. The park itself consists of approximately 20 acres, surrounded by woodland and looking onto the Southern Uplands. Accommodation consists of single and double log cabins and caravans. A five minute drive or a fourty five minute walk takes you to the village of New Cumnock, its railway station and the A76 Carlisle to Kilmarnock road, with regular bus and train services. The village has all amenities you need, from shops, including a chemists, butchers, post office, medical centre, a bank, library and social clubs. There is a 9 hole golf course on the edge of the village and an open air swimming pool during part of the summer. We are only three quarters of an hours' drive from Prestwick Airport and a perfect hub for those who want to visit the spectacular coastline of the seaside town Ayr, Troon and Irvine. www.ukparks.com/park_details_top.asp?parkid=354701290 332000 Glen Afton (Leisure) Park, Afton Road, New Cumnock, KA18 4PR Ayrshire

The aul' Tam o' Shanter at the northern entrance to New Cumnock has been demolished and cleared away at last. With both it and the derelict building next to the bridge over sweet Afton gone we're hoping that the town, well known to Rabbie, can attract some positive attention. The new Burns statue and the proposed state of the art replacement for the roadside cafe is only the beginning of puttin the "New" into New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Burns Corridor. t.co/1Evmy8jAttachments:

When passing through New Cumnock (A76), Ayrshire, on your way to Dumfries House, please stop off and have a look at the Arthur Memorial Church on Castle Hill (while you still can). Arthur (John Findlay Arthur) was born on 17 January 1807, most likely at Lochside House, New Cumnock [Addison 1727-1897 reads: CSI Walkside House, New Cumnock]. Lochside House being the Marquis Of Butes shooting Lodge. www.s1cumnock.com/memories....-aye-right.htmlWas there any connection between John Findlay Arthur and Dumfries House? John gained the M.D. in 1831 and C.M. (Glasgow) in 1836. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon on 14 February 1836, he was promoted to Surgeon on 29 October 1852. In the Indian Mutiny he was Surgeon to the 1st Madras Fusiliers who entered Lucknow as part of the 1st Relief Force under Sir Henry Havelock. He later served in the siege and capture of Lucknow. Arthur retired from the service with the rank of Surgeon-General in February 1860 and was awarded the C.S.I. in June 1869. Latterly a J.P. for Ayrshire, he died at New Cumnock, Ayrshire on 26 July 1886. Arthur Memorial Church was designed by Sir William Beddoe Rees, usually known simply as Beddoe Rees (1877 - 12 May 1931). Beddoes Rees's place of business in 1905 was 3 Dumfries Place, Cardiff, Wales. He designed many Welsh chapels before giving up his practice around 1914 to become managing director of Welsh Garden Cities Ltd, the organisation which built garden villages in several of industrial valleys in South Wales. Rees built up extensive business interests becoming the chairman of a number of companies, mostly in the coal mining and related industries. These included Ashburnham Collieries Ltd, Ashburnham Steamship and Coal Co. Ltd and North Amman Collieries. He was also a Director of Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries and Welsh Anthracite Collieries, Ltd.
